Somali Relief and Development organization (SORDO) was founded in October 2004 as a non – profit making organization dedicated to serving Somali people especially under – served and other marginalized groups. The organization was founded by local Somali and Diaspora professionals with diverse professional and academic backgrounds in humanitarian and development work. The idea behind the establishment of SORDO came when parts of Nugal, Sool and Mudug regions affected by a sudden freezing rain which hit Puntland just before the catastrophic Tsunami. Due to the limited presence of capable national organizations, the organization was established to steer local responses to communities affected by the freezing rains, Tsunami disaster and other natural and man-made disasters. In response to these disasters, SORDO was very successful in mobilizing humanitarian assistance and relief items such as food and clothes to support populations affected by disasters and emergencies including drought.
